The Short Stories host the third edition of the Italian Excellence exhibition initiative, a project to promote illustration for children conceived by the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, which received in the two previous editions widely success worldwide.

The exhibition presents the works of twenty young Italian illustrators, some of them born or working in the Emilia-Romagna Region, who stand out for their ability to make texts dialogue with images in a unique and original form: Giacomo Agnello Modica, Andrea Antinori, Michael Bardeggia, Beatrice Cerocchi, Marianna Coppo, Francesca Corso, Cecilia Ferri, Chiara Ficarelli, Marta Pantaleo, Giulia Pastorino, Irene Penazzi, Alice Piaggio, Camilla Pintonato, Michelangelo Rossato, Veronica Ruffato, Lorenzo Sangió, Francesca Sanna, Luca Tagliafico, Giulia Tomai, Veronica Truttero.

Between books and posters, magazines, networks and self-production, between manual, digital or mixed techniques, the new generation of illustration brings its new and surprising gaze to the universe of children’s publishing at Expo 2020.

MADE IN EMILIA-ROMAGNA:
HOW CULTURE AND COMPETENCE IMPROVE HUMAN LIFE

The elements exhibited in the Short Stories space from the Emilia-Romagna Region are more than just objects: they are projects that show each phase of their realization, from the idea to the development, from the communication to the distribution, giving life to a form of innovation that is more the sum of the parts.

The Design Is Everyday project shines a spotlight on the importance of the role played by design in the various product development phases, from the idea to its development, communication, distribution. It also highlights how the combination of these processes themselves generate forms that are increasingly new and innovative, resulting from the collaboration between the various protagonists of the productive fabric in Emilia-Romagna, a region with an exceptional creative and productive value.

The exhibition features a selection of local designs from the region. These tell a story that describes the capabilities of many companies from Emilia Romagna to generate production chains based on a weave of know-how, competences and production processes. The exhibition on everyday living focuses on human health. In particular, using tools like 3D printing, design is capable of developing new shapes and innovative materials for the orthopaedic sector and bio-engineering; but above all, design is a tool that unites robotics, the internet of things, mechatronics and competences related to surgery and physiotherapy. Additionally, it also shows how today design is increasingly more at the service of sectors that relate to the life and health of humans, for example in the creation of innovative products with ceramic materials for use in regenerative medicine.

It highlights the interweaving of different companies which use alternative processes, together developing structures, tools and skills to generate a form of innovation that becomes more than the sum of its individual parts. The result of the processes unleashed by these ‘new’ chains is the creation of unique products that are capable of improving – and in many cases safeguarding – our everyday life.
