Agri-food and fisheries co-operation, long aware of the sustainability challenge, has invested for years in innovation and has already been widely applying digital farming techniques, essential for climate change resilience. The event will focus on highlighting good practices and further technological developments in precision farming, irrigation and livestock farming, agroenergy and sustainable fishing.
The challenge posed to agriculture by the UN Global Goals and the EU Farm to Fork Strategy is to guarantee good, healthy and sufficient food to a growing population in times of climate change.
Co-operation has a crucial role to play in disseminating new techniques to the large number of small associated family farms which, otherwise, would not be adequate in size to face such complex challenges by themselves.
The cooperatives Il Raccolto, Progeo, Apofruit, Granlatte-Granarolo will present some of the main technological developments taking place in the field of: safeguarding of soil quality, targeted contribution of organic nutrients, reduction of fertilizers and pesticides, water saving, traceability of supply chain through big data management, reduction of methane and GHG emissions by livestock farms and the reduction of the use of antibiotics to counteract antimicrobial resistance. Best practices from the fisheries cooperative sector will also be presented, aimed at the conservation of fish stocks and marine ecosystems, as well as the reduction of fish waste and the recovery of plastic at sea or wasted nets.
The Forum will host representatives from the Italian Government (Undersecretary for European Affairs), COGECA (General Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives of the European Union), AREFLH (Assembly of European Fruit & Horticultural Regions and Academic of Agriculture) and University of Bologna.
